To His Excellency Francis Gore, Esq., Lieutenant Governor of the
Province of Upper Canada, &c., &c., &c., in Council
The Petition of George String of York Humbly Sheweth,
That your Petitioner’s Father, Jacob Staring, served His Majesty as a
private soldier in the 2nd Battalion of the King’s Royal Regiment of New
York until the Reduction in 1783; that after being discharged he returned
to the United States to oversee some business and remained unsettled
at the time of his joining the [Standard], where he died shortly after his
arrival.
Your Petitioner, being the eldest and only surviving son, prays your
Excellency may be pleased to grant him the quantity of land that his
said Father, Jacob String, would have been entitled to had he lived to
have returned to his country.
And your Petitioner as in duty bound will ever pray.
[Signature] George Staring (his mark)
